"In this age of Kali there is no other way, no other way, no other way than chanting the holy name of the Lord."
Śikṣāṣṭakam Verse 1
Composed by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu:
ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam
The holy name:
Cleanses the mirror of the heart.
Extinguishes the blazing fire of material existence.
Spreads the moonlight of spiritual life.
Revives true knowledge.
Expands transcendental bliss.
Enables one to taste nectar at every step.
Purifies the soul completely.
Within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, this mantra is regarded as the supreme spiritual practice for the present age because it is considered non-different from the Supreme Lord Himself. Chanting is understood not merely as prayer, but as direct association with God through His holy names.
"O Lord, O energy of the Lord, please engage me in Your loving devotional service."
This captures the mood emphasized by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda: the goal of chanting is not material gain or even liberation, but the awakening of pure love and service to Krishna.
